"I was taught that “critical condition” meant that the vital signs were not stable, and that in turn meant that the prognosis was really shaky until the vital signs stabilized. “Serious condition” implied that the vital signs were stable, and that meant that there was a better short term prognosis.The term “critical but stable” sounded like some kind of euphemistic oxymoron. When I looked that up, the definition that I saw was “critical, with no immediate likelihood of a change in status.” Still doesn’t sound right, but I hope that you get the point.
